My wife was looking for a new place to do some photography of our kids. She came across Stone Creek Park in Flower Mound Texas. Little did we know that such a beautiful park was less than 10 miles from our house. This little hidden park was tucked away right along my route home from work. I literally drove by this park every day for 2.5 years and never knew it was there. The Stone Creek Park is popular for photography because of the unique rock formations and flowing streams not normally found in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Two things you need to be aware of before visiting or doing any sort of photography in Stone Creek Park. The first is that there is Poison Ivy. I found many Poison Ivy plants growing along the trail. There is a path down to the creek which is clear and allows you access without brushing into any plants. Since Stone Creek Park is popular for photography, you will also need to be aware that you may have other people playing by the creek or taking photographs. Please be courteous to other people and share the creek with others enjoying it.
These are some photographs I took at Stone Creek Park.

Green Anoles mating
I came out of work August 3 to find these two Green Anole Lizards mating on the concrete. They were so caught up in their act that I was able to snap a few photographs from only a few inches away before they scurried off into the bushes. I have never witness these lizards mating. I have seen males fighting over territory and mates but never the act of mating. Too bad these were shot on a camera phone.

Yellow Jacket photographs
These are some photographs of Yellow Jackets. I found these Yellow Jacket Wasp under a log on a cold morning in spring. These wasp, just like most other insects, slow down and cant fly during the colder days. I was able to get these macro photographs of Yellow Jackets without any problems because the insects were cold and couldn't fly.
I shot these macro photographs of Yellow Jackets on my Canon 5D Mark II using a Canon MP-E 65mm 1x-5x macro lens and a Canon MT-24EX flahs unit.
Yellow Jackets are predatory insects that feed on necture, other insects and meat. They live in colonies and will fiercly defend their nest. Generally holes in the ground, bushes and other protected areas are used for nesting. Yellow Jackets are mostly harmless to humans except for a painful sting. Only people allergic have anything to fear.
These are some macro videos I took of Yellow Jacket Wasp.

Texas Rat Snake photographs
I was cleaning the yard a few weeks ago when this young Texas Rat Snake came out of the garden. He was very calm at the time. These reptiles can be very calm or very aggressive. I kept him for a few days while I photographed him. He was very aggressive when I photographed him. I got bit a few times. I wanted some photographs of a Texas Rat Snake on a white background so I put him on some poster board and shot these.
I took a video of a very large Texas Rat Snake a few years ago. This Texas Rat Snake was around 5 foot long. I took this video of it climbing a tree. These reptiles are excellent climbers.

Prairie Kingsnake photographs
I caught this Prairie Kingsnake in Troy Texas in April. Prairie Kingsnakes are generally very docile snakes. This snake did not bite and was not aggressive. These reptiles are found in most of the southern states. Prairie Kingsnakes eat mice and rats and will eat other snakes if they find them. This is how they get the name Kingsnake. Like all Kingsnakes they will eat other snakes even venomous ones. They have an immunity to the venom which makes Rattlesnakes and others vulnerable.
These photographs of a Prairie Kingsnake were taken on a Canon Rebel T3I.

White Crabspider on a Purple Flower
This is my favorite spider photograph I have taken. This is a White Crabspider on a Purple Flower. I was in Troy Texas visiting family. I noticed that almost all of the purple flowers had these tiny White Crabspiders on them. I got my macro lens and started taking photographs.
These tiny arachnids wait on the flowers for other insects to land. When they land the spiders grab them and eat them. I don't believe these spiders spin any sort of web. I never saw any webs around any of the spiders.
These photographs were taken on a Canon 5D Mark II camera using a Sigma 180mm lens and a Canon MT-24EX twin flash unit. No tripod was used.

Gray Treefrog photographs
These are some photographs of a Gray Treefrog. Gray Treefrogs are amphibians that live in the southern United States. This Gray Treefrog was caught outside of Austin Texas.
These are macro photographs of a Gray Treefrog. I used a Sigma 180mm macro lens to get these photographs. I used a Canon MT24-EX twin flash unit to get the light.
Gray Treefrogs do not get very big. They reach a size of about 2 inches. They can change colors slighty from a pale gray to a tan to a dark gray and usually have molted patterns on their back.

Photographs of a Tarantula.
These are photographs of a Tarantula I shot a few weeks ago. My co-worker knows that I like to take photographs of animals. Over the fourth of July weekend she offered to bring me back anything unusual she found at her parents ranch. She called Sunday and said she had found a Tarantula Spider for me.
The first photograph is my hand holding the Tarantula. These arachnids are mostly gentle and wont bite unless you really harass them.

I decided I wanted to get some shots of the spider crawling on a branch. I grabbed a branch from the yard and set it up so that the Tarantula was crawling on it.

In the end I wanted to do some stock type shots as well. I couldn't think of anything except using some toy blocks to spell the word spider and have the Tarantula crawl on it. These eight legged arachnids are pretty slow moving and calm so it wasn't hard to get a few photographs of the Tarantula.
